Scumbag Devo Enthusiast Takes Things Too Literally
The Sultan of Brunei, a longtime fan of Akron's deadpan surrealist rock band, Devo, has used the lyrics of the band's new wave smash, Whip it! to author a medieval policy against homosexuals and adulterers.
"We believe it’s a panacea for many problems facing a country," said the controversial Sultan. "The lyrics are quite clear that “whipping it” is suitable for both when a problem comes along, or when the cream sits out too long. We're just extending the same ethos to gays and philanderers."
It’s not the first time an electropop banger has been used to inform an important decision. Kevin Federline was alleged to have used the lyrics to the Pet Shop Boys’ track, What Have I Done to Deserve This?, as inspiration for his divorce paperwork ending his short lived marriage to Britney Spears.
Devo themselves been quick to distance themselves from the barbaric move. Songwriter, Gerald Casale wrote the song intending to satirize American optimism, drawing inspiration from communist propaganda posters and Thomas Pynchon's 1973 novel, Gravity's Rainbow — a veritable smorgasbord of "can-do" cliches.
"I'm not sure how a tongue-in-cheek synth pop classic constitutes any greenlighting of human rights abuses" noted Casale. "Charlie Manson started this shit with Helter Skelter and it's been downhill ever since."
More to come.
